Kielder Observatory
Home to the UK’s darkest skies, there’s no better place for an out of this world adventure than Kielder Forest.
Due to its protected status, Kielder Forest offers little light pollution, so you can enjoy amazing views of the heavens with hardly any assistance needed. But for the best views, there’s no better place to see stars than Kielder Observatory.
Built in 2008 to take advantage of the dark skies and sparse surroundings, the observatory was designed to blend in with its green surrounds and work with the landscape to offer an amazing spectacle – as well as an amazing view of the heavens!
Not only does the observatory blend in with its surroundings, but it also works with them wonderfully, with solar panels and a wind turbine providing all of its power.
Kielder Observatory offers an incredible spectacle all-year round. Winter’s long nights in particular are perfect for offering an amazing view of the heavens. And with the largest expanse of dark sky in Europe, you will see one of the UK’s best views of the Milky Way and many more amazing astrological sights. The Observatory offers events all year round too, from open days and interactive shows to observing nights and lectures.
Visit to learn all about the night sky and use the powerful telescopes under the guidance of enthusiastic astronomers, guest speakers and volunteers. With upwards of 40 events ever month, there’s bound to be an amazing introduction to stargazing for you.
You can book onto all events via the Kielder Observatory website. An out of this world adventure awaits!
